Kiddie prison post coming soon . . . and that Duke thing

I took a fascinating tour of three of the state's juvenile institutions last week, and I am working on a nice, long post about it all. The short story is that they weren't as bad as I thought they would be, but still not someplace we should be sending kids except in extreme circumstances. In the meantime, check out David Feige's (of Indefensible) spot-on analysis in Slate of why disgraced Duke prosecutor Mike Nifong's disbarment is a "freakish anomaly" rather than a precedent for the criminal justice system.

With a name like Nifong, the sound alone would be grounds for disbarrment. Just stopping by to say hello.

The main difference between Nifong and the average prosecutor is that Nifong was so careless in deciding whether there was enough evidence to prosecute in the first place. But I'm guessing once the decision to prosecute is made, most prosecutors would suppress evidence. Same as most cops would plant evidence if they "knew" the guy was guilty, or maybe if they just murdered an old lady serving a no-knock warrant on the wrong house.

I really, really, really hate Nancy Grace, BTW.

I was the recommit Case Manager for TYC. Back in 2002-04 I brought to the attention of management that the recommitts were tell me stories of abuse and corruption at TYC state schools. I heard the same types of stories from different kids at different times coming back to TYC from different TYC state schools. I found that the Judges are clueless, attorneys are clueless, prosecutors were even more clueless. This disgrace only affects Texas in the juvenile system, but is rampent throughout the Texas Criminal Justice system. When I brought documents written by recommitted youth regarding experiences in state schools to supervisors attention I was told to drop it. When I continued I was treated as if I was a trouble maker and not a team player then run off. Anyway you may know what occured next with TYC. All they had to do was correct the problems when I exposed them. Unfortunately this is our system of justice. Reactive rather then proactive. Guilty until proven innocent. Corrupt police, correctons officers and prosecutors. It's all about how it looks rather than true quality and substance. The prosecutions score, the win, false arrests, false witnesses, all to intice the federal government to support more grant money for local governments etc. Many people are being prosecuted and sent to jail for nothing but federal or state grant money. The more they lock-up the more funding they get. "Wake-up America."

The tyc is 120 years of physically, mentally, sexually, and verbally abusing the children and their families who turn to tyc for help. This is a joke of an agency and so far no one has the chutzpa to do anything about it but bitch.
