So, today, I had a client plead guilty to an assault charge involving a former classmate. The case was pretty old because she seemed to have had a habit of running away from home. Dad took a 5-hour bus ride to get here for her hearing today, which was great, except for the fact that he absolutely reaked of alcohol. After the plea, my client needed to talk to another prosecutor before heading back home because she is the complainant in a felony assault case where the defendant is her mother. Gee, I can't imagine why this girl keeps running away from home.

I hate situations like this. In NM when both a parent (or guardian) and a child are charged with domestic violence, usually, the kid stays in jail while their case is pending since it's not safe for them to go home. The adult's bail is set at $600, so if they can scrape up $60, they can go home. The adult pleads to either a misdemeanor or petty misdemeanor and gets probation for a year or 6 months. If the kid pleads to the same charges, best-case-scenario is 2 years of probation, but potentially a commitment since they still can't go home. It drives me crazy! This is why I left juvies.
