The alternative Dallas weekly, the Dallas Observer, has a long article detailing the horrid health care--both physical and mental--in the Dallas County jail. The story leading the article, about a young man who committed suicide just days after being returned from the state mental hospital, is very close to my heart. He was a client of one of my colleagues, and I went with her to visit his grandmother and brother right after he died. It was heartbreaking. Sadly, more than three years later, I don't think things are much better for our clients.

The Dallas County (Tx) jail is currently the subject of a federal lawsuit filed by the U.S. Department of Justice. This jail is one of, if not the number #1 violater of peoples human rights and civil rights violaters. This has been made possible by the deliberate indifference and mismanagent of Dallas Sheriff Lupe Valdez and the inept Dallas County Commissioners who are guilty for their knowing acquiescence in the unconstitutional behavior of their subordinates and the continued existence of brutal and barbaric confinement conditions which themselves are so injurious to inmates and staff that they blatantly violate many state and federal laws as well as the Texas and United States Constitutions.
